Farewell to Silver Link. The locomotive Silver Link was a popular electric locomotive on the tracks at Sandtoft. The locomotive made some appearances on the tracks at the Thorne Memorial Park but not too many as most of the passenger trains were hauled by the larger electric locomotives. The locomotive has now been sold to a new outside the Doncaster area so will not be making any further appearances at Thorne.
Welcome to the website for the Sandtoft Miniature Railway group. This website has now been up and running since 2000, some 16 years after the formation of the group to operate a miniature railway at the Sandtoft Transport Centre in 1983. The group operated the railway at Sandtoft from 1983 until 2000. The miniature railway was run very successfully during those years and became a very huge attraction with the visitors, especially the children. Due to operational problems the railway ceased all operations in May 2000. The group was invited by Doncaster & District Model Engineering Society Ltd to transfer their operations to the Thorne Memorial Park Miniature Railway some five miles away from Sandtoft. Our members are presently active at the this miniature railway on a regular basis and have successfully obtained a large amount of funding and sponsorship for projects at Thorne. Information about the 2009 operations at Thorne can be obtained by visiting their website click here By contrast to our railway activities six of our members have been very involved with the Friends of Doncaster Grand Theatre. Thanks to the hard work by theses members the Victorian Theatre built in 1899 has been saved from being demolished. Currently good progress is being made to re-open the theatre in 2011. If you would like to obtain further information about this project please visit their website http://www.friendsofthegrandtheatre.co.uk/ Another venture is our members becoming involved with the community radio TMCR FM 95.3 in Thorne www.thornemoorendscommunityradio.co.uk The radio station started broadcasting live from the new studio on 14th December 2009, with a 5 year licence that has now been granted by OfCom.
Steve Hobbs and Stuart Lamming just two of our four SMR members who have become regular broadcasters are seen at the radio station at the controls of the radio station presenters desk. A lot more complicated than driving a train!
Steve Hobbs interviewing the Mayor of Thorne-Moorends Cllr Tony Brookes, whilst myself Bob put on the World War II ARP wardens helmet whilst preparing one of the music from the archives shoes. Right one of the promotional postcards. For more information and photographs about the radio station visit:- Windows Live
TMCR FM 95.3 visits the museum on the 17th April 2010 for the launch into service of Edmonton trolleybus 189. Bob is here with radio stations portable equipment. The event was a great success and a tribute to the members of the museum who had financially contributed to the transportation from Canada to the Museum art Sandtoft and of course the vehicles restoration. Visit the museum's website for more details of the vehicle click here For more photographs of the event click here
